July 2010Hengrove Park Leisure Centre - work begins with synchronised swimmers making a splash Swimmers in Bristol and the southwest can really set their sights on Spring 2012 when the region’s stunning state-of-the-art swimming pool is set for completion. Building work is now underway. Synchronised swimmers from the Bristol Central Senior Squad performed a walk through of their impressive, pre-competition routine to mark the occasion. New bus route extensions Route extensions to several local bus services in South Bristol have now been agreed to serve the new Hengrove Park and Bridge Learning Campus developments. In the future the routes will also provide access to the new South Bristol Community Hospital and South Bristol Leisure Centre scheduled for opening in 2012. The new routes will come in to effect from Sunday 22nd August 2010. June 2010Street names announced Following consultation The Hengrove Park Forum and Partner the Council announces street names, see plan below. Christopher Brain Street commemorates the architect of the striking South Bristol Skills Academy Building, who unfortunately died before seeing his design realised. Landing Lights and Hangar Way were suggested by the Forum to commemorate the former airport. The address of the Skills Academy will be: South Bristol Skills Academy May 2010South Bristol Community Hospital is coming! On the evening of Thursday 13 May at Knowle West Walk-in Centre the public had an opportunity to find out more about what will be going on at the hospital when it opens, what it could mean for the community and how they can get involved. There were displays and information, presentations and workshops. View leaflet made available on the evening providing further information about the new hospital. April 2010Hengrove Leisure Centre – financial closure means building works can begin On Wednesday 14 April 2010 financial closure was reached on Bristol’s, multi-million pound Hengrove Leisure Centre PFI scheme. March 2010Spade in the ground marks start of work on South Bristol Community Hospital On Friday 05 March a ground cutting ceremony marked the official start of work on the new state of the art £54 million community hospital to be built at Hengrove Park in Bristol. February 2010New hospital for South Bristol - Its signed, sealed, delivered! This was the message from NHS Bristol to local people in South Bristol as confirmation came that contracts had been exchanged late on Friday to mark the very final stage in securing the new state of the art £45 million community hospital to be built at Hengrove Park in Bristol.
December 2009City of Bristol College celebrates Skills Academy 'Topping Out' Representatives from City of Bristol College, Bristol City Council, south Bristol secondary schools and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) have gathered together to celebrate the ‘topping out’ of the £30m South Bristol Skills Academy. All systems go! – Plans for new South Bristol Community Hospital agreed NHS Bristol is today able to announce that the business case for the new state of the art community hospital to be built at Hengrove Park in Bristol has been approved by the Department of Health. November 2009The temporary traffic signals where the Hengrove Park development meets Whitchurch Lane have been replaced by the permanent ones. The link road through to the Bridge Centre will remain closed off, but available to pedestrians who are now able to cross Whitchurch Lane safely. At the same time, the Toucans outside the Somerfield building have been activated, improving pedestrian and cycle access to the building. October 2009Hartcliffe roundabout roadworks As part of the highway works for the Hengrove Park Development, Hartcliffe Roundabout has been signalised to cope with future larger traffic volumes and to provide a safer pedestrian route to the site. Pedestrians and cyclists are now able to cross at the signals as an alternative to using the subways. Footway and cycleways have also been constructed across the central island. July 2009South Bristol Community Hospital update SBCH remains central to plans for the future design of local health services in Bristol. The same hospital with the same range of services is still planned. The main difference from previous plans is the build time, which is likely to extend to 24 months from the original 12 months. Assuming a maximum build time of 24 months this would result in an opening date towards the end of 2011. January 2009Vegetation clearance is being undertaken to allow for the widening of Whitchurch Lane. The main clearance will be completed by the end of January. Works to widen Whitchurch Lane will be completed this year. View plan of the vegetation clearance November 2008Friday 14 November turf cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction. The project is currently on track to open in September 2010. October 2008Planning consent was granted on 29 October 2008. The anticipated start date is March 2009. Due to be fully operational by September 2010. September 2008Construction work to start on the new roads, pavements and utilities. A boundary fence has been erected around the whole site to help ensure that it is safe and secure. Along the northern boundary the fence line extends beyond the Hospital and Leisure Centre sites. This is to allow space for temporary construction compounds that will be reinstated and revert back to park use once the buildings have been completed. View the plans for details of the fencing boundary, construction compound locations and details of other infrastructure works being undertaken up to December 2008. August 2008Planning application submitted 15 August 2008. Members of the public were invited to comment on the scheme.
